In 1979, a group of Iranian university students took over the US embassy, which they maintained had turned into a center of espionage aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic in Iran following the country’s Islamic Revolution earlier in 1979. Imam Khomeini stressed, “I have said it times and again that takeover of the US embassy by Muslim youth and students was a natural reaction to the harm being done to our people by America.”
